Senator wants world cup campaign funded with recovered loot

OrderPaperToday – Senator Sam Anyanwu (PDP, Imo) has proposed to the Federal Government to make use of recovered looted funds to finance preparations for super eagles 2018 Russia world cup campaign.

This was followed by a point of order raised by Senator Joseph Ogba (PDP, Ebonyi) on Tuesday who lauded the victory of the super eagles against Zambia on Saturday and became the first African country to qualify for the mundial.

Speaking on the issue, Anyanwu stringently cautioned that the players must be properly funded to avoid a situation of success at the initial stages of the competition and hiccups subsequently as a result of inadequate funding.

He said: “It is important to note that we always succeed at the early stage but when we go into the real stage we have issues. Now that we still have time to prepare for the world cup, it is important that we use all the money recovered so that they don’t say the players don’t have money for bonuses and or flight tickets.

“It is important all the money that has been scattered even the ones in the cupboard and in the pit hole should be brought together for preparation to make Nigeria proud. I believe proper motivation and funding will be the best for them.”

In an additional prayer, the senate also resolved that the Nigerian Football Federation judiciously manage funds given to them by the Federation of International Football Association (FIFA).

This is sequel to a statement made by the president of the senate, Bukola Saraki who accused the federation of reckless behavior when monies are disbursed to them.

Saraki said: “We all know when you a country qualify for the world cup, FIFA releases a significant amount of money to NFF and over the years the money has been squandered. About 10 billion dollars would be released and it is important that NFF judiciously manage the funds from FIFA and CAF.”
