OrderPaperToday – Some newly elected House of Representatives members of various political parties on Thursday reportedly endorsed Femi Gbajabiamila as speaker of the house.
This is coming shortly after serving and governors-elect from the Southwest geo-political zone reportedly took a similar position two days ago in Abuja at the residence of Governor of Ekiti State, Mr. Kayode Fayemi during a meeting of all members- elect from the zone.
Gbajabiamila is the current majority leader of the House and is favoured by the All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Muhammadu Buhari to become speaker in the ninth assembly.
Speaking to OrderPaperNG at the venue of the event, Mr. Mohammed Umar, member-elect from Kwara State (APC) said “we have come from various political parties to make our final stance known that we have endorsed Gbajabiamila devoid of partisan politics. We find him intelligent and worthy enough to be our Speaker in the ninth assembly. He is one man that can carry everybody along and play with the executive and the legislators”.
Also, Mr. Onofiok Luke, another member-elect and current speaker of Akwa Ibom state House of Assembly, said the majority leader is the “best qualified” for the position
He gave the numbers of his colleagues present at the meeting as 178.
Luke who is of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) said the decision is also devoid of personal interests and sentiments.
He said: “We decided to convene ourselves as newly elected members and look at the emergence of next leadership of the ninth assembly.
“We have looked through the credentials of those aspiring to become speaker and we understand that with the challenges we have, we need a bipartisan approach to solve the problem of Nigeria.
“We need someone that has shown he has what it takes even as reflected in his manifesto to carry the entire parties along”.
