2019: Senate approves N234.5bn for INEC

OrderPaperToday- The Senate has approved the sum of N234,507,272,393 for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to enable it carry out its duties concerning the 2019 general elections, adequately.

In a letter sent on the 11th of July by President Muhammadu Buhari, the initial amount of N189,007, 272,393 was allocated to the electoral commission and it was to be culled from both the recurrent and capital components of Special Intervention Programme captured in the Service Wide Votes of the 2018 Appropriation Act, and another part in the 2019 budget.

Additionally, N53, 237,777,707 was set aside for security agencies, leading to a sum of N242 billion.

Meanwhile, INEC has another allocation of N45.5 billion, as statutory transfers, included in the 2018 budget, bringing the sum of their funds for the 2019 general elections to N235.5 billion.

As at the time of filing in this report, the appropriation committee is meeting with security agencies on the funds allocated to them for the 2019 polls.
