OrderPaperToday – 24 hours after President Muhammadu Buhari nominated his aide on social media for the position of commissioner in the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the senate has confirmed the nomination of Dr. Chukwuemeka Chukwu as Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) representing Abia State.
President Muhammadu Buhari in pursuant to the provision of Section 154(1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), forwarded the nomination to the red chamber for confirmation.
The nomination was subsequently referred to the Senate Committee on INEC.
Presenting the report of its screening of the nominee, Chairman of the Committee, Senator Kabiru Ibrahim Gaya (APC, Kano), said there is no petition or incriminating reports against him.
He added that the nominee is not affiliated to any political party or participated in any political rally or campaign.
According to Gaya, the nominee “is a person of integrity who displayed a high level of intelligence and appeared to have the temerity to hold the office of REC.”
Based on the lawmaker’s submission, Chukwu’s nomination was confirmed by the red chamber in plenary.
Recall that Buhari’s nomination of Lauretta Onochie, his social media aide, has generated heated controversy in the public with many criticizing the decision and asking the president to rescind it.
