Abaribe: Police trying to cover up assassination attempt on Ekweremadu

OrderPaperToday- Senator Eyinnaya Abaribe (PDP, Abia) has accused the Nigeria Police of trying to downplay the assassination attempt on the life of the Deputy President of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu.

Recall that on Tuesday, Senator Ekweremadu reported to his colleagues that he was woken up by armed men who reportedly tried to take his life and that of his wife and son.

In a point of order during plenary on Tuesday, he narrated his experience and submitted that the country is no longer safe.

But the Police in statement by its Spokesman, Jimoh Moshood, stated that it was “mere burglary” and not an assassination attempt as suggested by Senator Ekweremadu because a house within the vicinity was also attacked.

Rising on a point of order on Wednesday,  Senator Abaribe expressed surprised at the police’s report even when they refused taking statement from the victims.

He said: “The police said it was a mere burglary. We all know that these days are very ominous days for politicians in Nigeria especially for those who are politically exposed as each and every one of us is. For the police to quickly without even interviewing the very person for whom this incident happened to- the deputy senate president, wife and his son – and come out and determine that it was a burglary, actually burgles the mind.

“We know in this country Bola Ige was killed in his home. We know and also that a former gubernatorial candidate, Funsho Williams was also killed in his home. And the investigations are still ongoing. For the police to quickly and willingly dismiss this home invasion that could have led to a fatality and their proof was that somebody else was burgled. Nobody knows how they have come to such situation.”

Senator Abaribe insisted that the red chamber take up an investigation on the matter while querying the Police saying, “our fear today is why the Police is engaging in a cover up. Why is the police continually at any time that it concerns people that do not have presidential oversight or cover, they quickly come out and have a report.”

In his contribution, Senator Mao Ohuabunwa (PDP, Abia) submitted that there was a conspiracy between the internal security and the armed men.

“Nobody burgles into any place, without internal compromise and looking at the house of a person like the Deputy Senate President, for anybody to just go for mere burglary, you must be a suicide burglar.”

In his submission, Senator Dino Melaye (PDP, Kogi), the police selects those they provide security services to.

“To come out and say its mere burglary shows that the Nigeria Police has identified some individuals that no matter what happen, we will not get their service.

“If this has happened to one of the faithfuls of Mr. President, this will not be the reaction of the Inspector-General of Police. If this has happened to one of the close friends of the villa, this will not be the reaction of the IGP.”
