OrderPaperToday – National Secretary of Forward With Buhari (FWB) group, Mr. Kayode Ajulo, has urged the newly elected leadership of the National Assembly to work hand in hand with the President Muhammadu Buhari to move the country forward.
Mr. Ajulo, a civil rights lawyer, who spoke to journalists in Abuja, enjoined the new leaders to ensure the doctrine of separation of power, checks and balances was considered despite the fact that the All Progressives Congress (APC) was in control of the majority in the National Assembly.
On what are his expectations for the Buhari administration going forward, he said: “I always believe that to everything there is the advantage and the disadvantage. As it is today we can say that the APC has had its way but it is expected that they should have their way in a normal democracy, they are the ruling party and being the ruling party, it is expected that by the time you look at the moves of the House and the Senate, it is expected that the party in majority will be the one that would produce the leadership in both houses; that is why today you see the APC candidates Senator Ahmed Lawan being the Senate President and Senator Ovie Omo-Agege being the Deputy Senate President and the same thing with the House of Representatives where we have Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila and Hon. Wase.
“So one of the good things is that would come out of it is there won’t be excuse from the federal government that somebody or house is impeding them to serve Nigeria the way it is. I want to believe that anything that come from the government, lofty ideas that President Buhari has already prepared for Nigeria would be done immediately not that President Buhari will say that we need this or that thing to be done and on getting to the national assembly it would be frustrated. APC being the ruling party happens to be there; I want to believe that the doctrine of separation of power, checks and balances and all that will still continue.”
Mr. Ajulo however dismissed fears in some quarters that with the APC having it preferred candidates as leaders of the NASS, the executive would have its way on all issues.
Hear him: “Many people will continue to say that now the national assembly will now be a rubber stamp; I wish to defer because I believe it will not even be so. If anybody has the knowledge of the workings of the national assembly, it is not even the leadership, we are all living witnesses where the entire floor of the house will defer from the presiding officer and the floor will have their way and I always believe that that is the way it should be.
“But like what I keep on saying, whether they want to fight or they don’t want to fight, whether they want to pally or they want to start throwing punches, what matters most is Nigerians first, that is what it is, what will make Nigeria great is what they should fight about but to now go for personal ambition and trying to look for their selfish interest, I think these are the things I know that Nigerians will resist despite the fact that we support Buhari at all time.”
