OrderPaperToday – Members of the North Central Caucus of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Tuesday demanded that the position of speaker of the 9th assembly be zoned to them.
Speaking to the press on behalf of the caucus, Mr. John Dyegh (APC, Benue) enjoined Nigerians to support the zone’s quest for the speakership position based on the sense of justice, equity and fairness.
He noted that since the southwest has produced the vice president and the northwest has the position of President of the country, it would be more equitable to have the speaker of the Reps zoned to north central.
According to him, “we humbly wish to appeal to our great party, the APC, to consider the north central group-political zone for the position of Speaker of the House of Representatives in the 9th assembly.”
He continued by saying that “zoning the position is important to ensure balance and spread between and among the six group-political zones has made it imperative to give prime consideration to the north central zone to produce the position of speaker,” adding that “it is not by coincidence that the Nigerian constitution enshrined federal character in the distribution of offices and leadership positions in the country.”
The caucus however acknowledged the “supremacy of our party, the APC, in addressing the issue zoning positions in equitable, just and fair manner that will foster unity and cordial relations among members of our party and our capacity of the national leadership of the APC to do right to all in order to advance national cohesion, balance of power and federal character.”
