OrderPaperToday – The two lead political parties in the Osun state gubernatorial elections are up in arms over the declaration of the polls inconclusive by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
INEC announced a rerun of the election due to the close margin between the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and cancellation of votes in five polling units which exceeds the difference between the parties.
PDP which is in the lead with over 300 votes accused the APC of using INEC’s declaration against its candidate.
But APC in a statement by its Spokesperson on Sunday rejected the allegation noting that the elections are more “peaceful, transparent, credible and acceptable” which is a “departure from the situation under past Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) administrations where the people’s will was subverted and elections where manipulated.”
In the leadup to the rerun election, they called on the Osun electorates, party supporters and members to “remain upbeat and focused on the task of consolidating on the APC Change administration in the state by voting for the victory of our candidate, Gboyega Oyetola.”
But the opposition party in a statement released by the Spokesperson, Kola Ologbondiyan, argued that the process was conclusive and met the requirements of the Section 179 (2) (a) (b) 1999 constitution.
The section read, ‘A candidate for an election to the officer of Governor of a state shallbs deemed to have been duly elected where, there being two or more candidates- (a) he has the highest number of votes cast at the election; and (b) he has not less than one-quarter of all the votes cast in each of at least two-thirds of all the local government areas in the State.’
With this argument, the party noted that the declaration made by INEC is “therefore a sordid robbery of the franchise of the people of Osun state, who participated in the election.”
According to PDP, the APC had to “bear pressure on INEC to declare the election inconclusive so as to pave way for the perfection of their manipulative schemes which the people of Osun state have firmly resisted so far.”
The party thereafter charged the Chairman of the commission, Mahmud Yakubu “to avoid the fury of the people by immediately reversing this fraudulent decision of the Resident Electoral Commissioner and declaring our candidate the winner of the election. Anything short of this is definitely not acceptable to the PDP and the people of Osun and it is a direct recipe for crisis.”
