OrderPaperToday– The Court of Appeal in Abuja has upheld the judgement of the River State Election Petition Tribunal which sacked George Sekibo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)  as the senator representing Rivers East senatorial district.
The court which made this decision on Thursday also declared AndrewUchendu as the legitimate representative of Rivers East.

The court dismissed the appeal by Sekibo stating that it lacks merit.

It should be noted that the tribunal had

on June 29

declared Uchendu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) the winner of the senatorial election

It further directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to withdraw the certificate of return given to Sekibo and then issue another one to Uchendu.

The decision of the tribunal was based on the fact that Uchendu won majority of the vote cast in the Rivers re-run legislative election.‎

Uchendu had also approached the tribunal with a petition asking the court to declare him as the winner of the poll.

He alleged that INEC failed to take into cognisance the results of some wards and polling units before declaring Sekibo as the winner of the election
