OrderPaperToday – Mr. Dickinson Tarkighir representing Makurdi/ Guma federal constituency of Benue State has defected from the People Democratic Party (PDP) back to All Progressives Congress (APC).
This was announced by the Deputy Speaker, Mr Lasun Yusuf, on the floor of the green chamber on Tuesday.
Mr. Tarkihir who was elected on the platform of the APC in 2015 defected to the PDP in the last quarter of 2018. However, his ambition to return to the federal house on the platform of the PDP was thwarted as he lost the primaries to Mr. Bem Mzondu.
But speaking to the media on his return to APC, he said the reason for his volte farce has nothing to do with his loss of the PDP ticket, saying “I lost election since October but I didn’t decamp at that time, so this is not about me losing election but it is for the peace, unity and progress of the state”.
He said: “Most of you here know that I won election into the House of Representatives on the platform of APC and I would like to state that I never abandoned the party because it wasn’t performing well but rather I was furious and frustrated with the way my people were being attacked by herdsmen which led to the wanton killings and destruction of properties.
“The inability of the federal government to tackle the issue head-on then was why I left the party. Though, that matter has been substantially contained and all we need to do now including me and the state government is to continue to relate with the federal government to ensure that the crisis comes to an end. I would also like to say that the whole herdsmen crisis was highly politicized”.
Mr. Tarkighir is not the only legislator that left the party that brought him to office to another political party and made u-turn.
Recall that Mr. Eward Pwajok from Plateau state had also decamped from the APC back to PDP on whoich platform he won election to the House of Representatives in the first place.
