Birnin Gwari: Reps wants bandits tagged terrorists

OrderPaperToday – The House of Representatives has asked that armed bandits that have been on a killing spree in parts of the country should be declared as terrorists.

Digressing from its usual bashing of President Muhammadu Buhari, the lawmakers also commended the President on his response to the recent killings in Kaduna State.

The House also commended the Governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai, for his role in solving the crisis, while urging the federal government to declare the armed bandits a terrorist organization.

These followed the adoption of a motion moved by Hassan Shekarau (APC, Kaduna) and Abbas Tajudeen (APC, Kaduna), entitled: ‘Need to Stop the Incessant Merciless and Barbaric Attacks by Armed Bandits on Birnin Gwari Communities in Kaduna State.’

Shekarau noted that last week, while responding to a motion moved by Mark Gbillah (APC, Benue) on the killings in Benue, he declared that the President has failed and the government has failed, but the recent response by the President to the crisis has given him a change of heart.

He expressed his delight at the recent approval given by the President to form a new battalion, to be deployed to Birnin Gwari and the deployment of additional 300 policemen and formation of a Police area command.

Speaking on the need to declare the arm bandits terrorists, he said: “In the last two years, over 1000 persons have been killed by the armed bandits, over 100,000 livestock stolen and property worth millions of Naira destroyed.”

He added that, “the mode of operation by the bandits has become alarming as they have increased in number and carry sophisticated weapons, likening them to terrorists.”

The House then mandated its committees on Defence, Army, Air Force, Police Affairs, and Legislative Compliance to ensure implementation.
