OrderPaperToday- The meeting of the leadership of the National Assembly which was scheduled for today has been called off following the barricading of the entrances to the National Assembly Complex by men of the Department of State Security.
The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yusuf Lasun, made the announcement while speaking to journalists at the entrance of the National Assembly complex in Abuja.
Lasun, who spent about 35 minutes inside the complex on Monday, told journalists that the current situation is inconducive for the meeting, which was scheduled following calls for lawmakers to reconvene to consider the budget for the 2019 polls amongst other pertinent issues.
He said: “I was informed by the Senate President, through text message, that there will be a meeting by 12. I drove here to attend that meeting, I didn’t know there are other issues.
“With this current situation, a meeting cannot be peacefully held.”
Speaking further, the Deputy Speaker dismissed rumours that the Senate President and the Speaker could be forcefully impeached.
According to him: “It is difficult to impeach a presiding officer because you need two thirds of the total members not just sitting members.”
