OrderPaperToday – President Muhammadu Buhari has signed into law the age reduction bill otherwise known as Not-Too-Young-To-Run (NTYTR).
The President however in a manner of joking, admonished the youths to hold off on their presidential ambitions till after the 2019 elections wherein he is seeking mandate renewal for another four years.
Recall that the National Assembly on 17th of April transmitted the bill and 11 other constitution alteration bills following the resolution of 35 states houses of assemblies.
Buhari had promised to sign the bill in his speech delivered on Democracy day.
The bill was signed this afternoon inside the Council Chambers of the Aso Rock Presidential Villa in Abuja.
This was also confirmed in a tweet by Buhari’s Special Assistant on New Media, Bashir Ahmad some minutes after the signing on Thursday.
He said: “History is made, President @MBuhari has signed into law the #NotTooYoungToRun bill. Congratulations to all young men and women at @YIAGA and all the supporters of the movement.
The bill seeks to alter Sections 65, 106, 131, 177 of the Constitution to reduce the age qualification for president from 40 to 30; governor from 35 to 30; senator from 35 to 30; House of Representatives membership from 30 to 25 and State House of Assembly membership from 30 to 25.
