OrderPaperToday– The spokesperson of the House of Representatives on Tuesday said allegations that some of its members are hiding Coronavirus infections are untrue as the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has not confirmed that any member of the parliament has the disease.
Speaking during a press briefing in the House of Representatives, he also revealed that the Green Chamber’s earlier scheduled visits to constituents in order to create awareness on the need to enrol their children in schools have been suspended.
On allegations of Coronavirus infections, he said, “This is the reason why I keep saying fake news is destroying our society. There is no such thing as a member infected with the coronavirus disease, though I am not speaking for the Senate but I do not know of any lawmaker that is currently infected with the virus.
“The National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has not confirmed that any member of the parliament has been infected with the coronavirus disease, until then, the news remains fake.”
On the suspension of the visits to constituents as part of efforts to check increasing number of out-of-school children in the country, Kalu said lawmakers have been directed lawmakers to remain within Abuja during the break in case of any emergency sitting and in line with the latest directive by the federal government restricing social gatherings.
“We are living in a time where saving lives is more important than what you will use to feed lives. It is who is alive that will be educated and mind you, that resolution has been overtaken by the current health event which is ravaging countries,” he explained
When asked about measures put in place by members to enlighten their constituents on ways to contain the Coronavirus pandemic, he answered, “For me, I just came back from my constituency where I went to speak with them. This is where the constituency office becomes a necessity and that is why it is legal for every member to own a constituency office.
“A member can through this avenue issue directives to aides in these constituency offices to create awareness on this deadly virus. This is the time to energise and equip our various constituency offices.”
