OrderPaperToday – The House of Representatives on Thursday resolved to investigate the killing of a Ken Saro-Wiwa Polytechnic lecturer, Dr. Ferry Gberegbe and others allegedly by men of the Federal Special Anti-robbery Squad (SARS) and the Nigerian Army during the just concluded elections in Rivers State.
Nigerians have repeatedly called on the present administration to disband the dreadful FSARS unit of the police following several reports of killings and human right violations, the most recent being the killing of Kayode Johnson in Lagos.
The decision to investigate the killings followed a motion of urgent importance moved by Kingsley Chinda (PDP, Rivers) during plenary on Thursday.
Leading the debate on the motion, Chinda said that at the last general elections in Rivers State, heavily armed men of FSARS and Army were visible in the state with the aim to harass and intimidate of voters and electoral officers.
He stated that on the 9th of March, 2019, at Khana local government area collation centre, the late Gberegbe was shot allegedly by men of FSARS led by Mr. Akin Fakorede, an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP).
Chinda noted that if killings are not investigated and checked, it will lead to anarchy.
The House after observing a minute silence for the diseased as prayed by the motion, mandated its committees on Army, Human Right, Justice and Police Affairs to probe the matter and to report back in two weeks.
The House also condemned the killings in strong terms.
