OrderPaperToday– The House of Representatives has adopted a motion urging the federal government to declare Oye-Obi in Benue State an unsafe and disaster area until a mysterious disease that is plaguing the area is arrested.
The House also mandated the federal government, through the Federal Ministry of Health, to send medical experts to Oye-Obi in Orihi Council Ward of Obi Local Government Area, as well as Oju Local Government Area to access the situation with the view to control the ugly epidemic.
Furthermore, the legislators called on the government to provide decent boreholes and other social infrastructure, as well as medical facilities with qualified medical personnel to the affected areas.
The matter was raised by Mr. Samson Okwu representing Uju/Obi federal constituency of Benue State (PDP) under matters of urgent national importance, noting that the deadly disease has claimed several lives already and left many in coma with no hope of survival in various hospital where they were admitted.
He further explained that Oye-Obi community of Obi LGA has an estimated population of over 6,000 people and share common boundary with Ekpong Ainu, Ogboma Ainu and Ogege Idelle in Oju Local Government Area of Benue State respectively and there was likelihood of the disease spreading to other nearby communities.
Okwu informed that the outbreak of the epidemic was reported by health officers of Obi local government council on the 29th January, 2020.
Adding that despite the quick intervention and effort of the Benue State government, the death toll still continue to increase on daily routine as even the nature of the disease still remain unknown.
Mr. Okwu also decried the inadequate medical facilities and personnels in Obi and Oju local government areas to take care of the looming health challenge of the people.
He lamented, “The outbreak of this epidemic has caused economic stagnation and hardship to the people because of fear of contacting the unknown while undertaking business venture,” adding that “unless very urgent steps are taken by this Honourable House to arrest the rapid spread of the epidemic which is imminent, many innocent people of Oju/Obi Federal Constituency and her immediate neighbouring communities will lose their lives.”
The motion was adopted when the presiding officer put the question and referred to the Ministry of Health and other relevant health agencies to lend support with the view to wipe out the epidemic in the affected communities.
Recall that the Senate had recently raised the alarm over this unknown disease, while calling for investigations by relevant government health agencies.
