OrderPaperToday – The Senate has called on the Federal Ministry of Power, Works and Housing as well as the Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA) to intervene in the gully erosion that has enveloped communities in Abia North Senatorial district.
The intervention is requested in restoring the easy mobility of vehicles, citizens, goods and services in the affected areas.
The resolution of the red chamber followed a motion by Senator Mao Ohuabunwa (PDP, Abia) on the menace of gully erosion in several communities of Abia North especially in lsuikwuato LGA communities of Uturu and Oguduasaa.
According to the Senator, the ecological environment of many communities in the 5 LGAs of Abia North (Arochukwu, Ohafia, Bende, Isuikwuato and Umunneochi) have all been facing serious levels of gully erosion partly due to increased rainfall. He added that the erosion has resulted to loss of lives and property while hindering access to farmlands and limiting the harvesting of food crops.
“This erosion tragedy at this time, has the capacity of collapsing the entire rural agricultural economy of the thriving food basket areas of lsuikwuato and Abia North, especially the communities of Oguduasaa and Uturu, with the consequent loss of valuable agricultural products and property, and with the attendant results of food insecurity both locally and beyond the state; all of which require urgent intervention to arrest the situation before another heavy rainy season sets in,” Ohuabunwa stated.
The Senate in its other resolutions urged the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to immediately provide relief materials to the displaced persons in the affected communities of Abia North Senatorial District.
Also, the red chamber called on the Nigerian Ecological Fund and the Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP) to urgently come up with a permanent solution to the endemic gully erosion in the area.
