OrderPaperToday – To curb the problem of multiple taxation, a tax expert, Prof Abiola Sanni has urged the Federal parliament to repeal the abuse-prone taxes and levies act.
Sanni made the call while delivering a lecture on “Harmonization of taxation and regulation on telecoms infrastructure” at the Stakeholders’ engagement forum organized by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) in Abuja on Tuesday.
The Professor of law described the abuse of the current tax law by States and MDAs as extortion.
He noted that for there to be real growth of infrastructures in the telecoms sector, issues of over taxation and over regulation must be completely eradicated.
Sanni added that the new law must be decentralised, and he urged all MDAs to take a cue from the NCC who recently reviewed its licence fees from N250,000 to N10,000.
He stressed that even though taxation is the oxygen of any nation, he said that less and harmonised taxes present opporunities such as employment, investment and infrastructural development.
He urged stakeholders at the event to “embrace the challenge of developing a draft charter of rights to show the gap between expectations and performances.”
