OrderPaperToday – The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has extended the deadline for linking of telephone SIM and National Identity Number (NIN) by 6 weeks.
The extension is below the 10 weeks extension the House of Representatives directed Ministry of Ministry and NCC to implement.
On Monday, a statement signed by NCC Executive Vice Chairman, Prof Umar Danbatta announced that the deadline for linking SIM and NIN has been extended to 19th January 2021 from the previous date of 31st of December, 2020.
The Commission also announced the cancellation of USSD and verification fees.
According to Prof Danbatta, the decision followed a stakeholders meeting chaired the Minister of Communications, Isa Ali Ibrahim.
The stakeholder at the meeting include; Chairman-Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC); Director-General (DG), National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA); DG, National Identity Management Commission (NIMC); Executive Commissioner, Technical Services (ECTS), NCC; Executive Commissioner, Stakeholder Management (ECSM), NCC; Chairman, Association of Licensed Telecom Operators of Nigeria (ALTON); Chief Executive Officers of MTN, Airtel, Ntel, Glo, Smile, and 9Moble.
The stakeholders also resolved that “NIMC has provided strategies to enable citizens to attend the registration in full compliance with Covid-19 protocols – particularly the use of facemasks which remains mandatory and maintenance of social distancing.”
