OrderPaperToday – The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) Mr. Boss Mustapha on Thursday said that the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on the novel Coronavirus containment has established 33 centres across the states of federation for testing.
The SGF who doubles as the Chairman of the PTF said regulations and other measures to combat the spread of the disease were being put in place, stressing that the overall national response strategy in tackling the disease is based on data from other countries as well as protocols issued by the World Health Organization (WHO).
He spoke at an interactive meeting organized by the House of Representatives ad-hoc Committee on COVID-19 probing the funds and other national resources put into the fight against the deadly respiratory disease in Nigeria.
The SGF told the lawmakers that, “a lot of aggressive measures has been put to contain the spread of the disease (and) despite the efforts, the disease has continued to spread astronomically in the country but we shall continue to do our best”.
In his update on the number of cases he revealed that, “currently 13,870 confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus disease in the country and plans are at an advanced stage to invite the Director-General of the West Africa Health Organization into the country to complement these efforts.”
In a related development, a member of the House Committee, Mr. Emmanuel Oghene (PDP, Lagos) frowned at the failure of the PTF to pay for feeding and accommodation of returnee Nigerians who were airlifted into the country two weeks ago and been quarantined in various hotels in Abuja and Lagos.
In reaction to the allegation, Dr. Sani Aliyu, the National Coordinator PTF said, ” it is not affordable, it is not sustainable and mind you, we spent so much in bringing these people back into the country.
“We have so many projects like building of more COVID-19 centres across the country and other things so it is not possible to do all of that. Although, we also gave them an option to either isolate in the hotel or at stay safe at their homes but again it is unfortunate that there’s interstate lockdown and it has been difficult for them to move”.
Earlier, the Chairman of the committee, Mr. Haruna Mshelia (APC, Borno), in his opening remarks commended the PTF for performing well and assured the team of the unalloyed support of parliament.
