OrderPaperToday- A member of the House of Representatives, Diri Douye (PDP, Bayelsa) has called on the federal government to declare Bayelsa state, “a state of natural disaster,” due to incessant floods.
The lawmaker made the plea while presenting a motion of urgent public importance on the floods ravaging his state.
While moving the motion, Douye disclosed that the most recent floods already claimed more than 200 lives and have displaced 1.5 million people.
He condemned the federal government for failing to take proactive steps to curb the perennial flooding, despite the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) forecast of heavy rainfall.
“Government failed to be proactive, rather turned to information bureau, sending out statistics, rather than protecting lives,” he cried out.
The House therefore resolved to urge the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to deploy resources to the affected communities.
The House also urged the Government to provide infrastructure to prevent the reoccurrence of the disaster.
