OrderpaperToday – Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, has urged the Nigerian military to consider local content when equipping the armed forces.
Gbajabiamila stated this on Thursday in Abuja during the budget defence session of the House of Representatives’ committee on Defence.
While speaking with the Chief of defense staff, Gabriel Olonisakin-led team, he said he was impressed that the military are now patronising local manufacturers.
According to the Speaker, “we just need to encourage them. Am glad you are doing that which goes to show that we are on the same page.”
Gbajabiamila further harped on the need for the military to look into the area of cyberspace as a way of been technologically advanced in protecting the country’s territory.
While acknowledging efforts made by the military in protecting the country in the previous years, the Speaker charged them to do more.
On his part, the Chief of Defence staff, Gabriel Olonisakin explained to the committee that emphasis is on the upgrade of some of the departments such as the Defence industry cooperation of Nigeria (DICON), the Airspace and the Research and Development department.
He called for adequate funding and the cooperation of the national assembly to make laws or amend such where necessary for the enhancement of these sectors of the military.
Chairman of the committee, Mr. Babajimi Benson while quizzing the defence boss on the previous military budget implementation, pledged to see to the early release of the budget to enable the armed forces meet its constitutional role of defending the territorial integrity of the country.
