OrderPaperToday– The Senate has said there is no truth in allegations that its controversial Hate speech Bill is aimed at pursuing a third term agenda for President Muhammadu Buhari.

It also added that the proposed legislation is also not intended to islamise the country.

The Senate was reacting to a statement credited to the National Legal Adviser of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP), Mr. Emmanuel Enoidem, that the bill seeks to achieve a third term for President Muhammadu Buhari who is currently serving his second term.

Speaking with journalists on Monday, the acting Senate Spokesman, Godiya Akwashiki stated that the bill is singlehandedly sponsored by Senator Sabi Abdullahi.

Akwashiki said, “It is the right of the Senator to sponsor a bill tagged ‘private senator bill’ even if we have an executive bill. But the Hate Speech Bill before the Senate is a private senator bill. Mr President has nothing to do with this issue. It has nothing to do with third term agenda.

“It has nothing to do with islamising this country. Spokesmen of political parties should mind the way they speak. We should be peace lovers and peace keepers.”

He wondered why Nigerians are afraid of the bill which will still go through appropriate channels for the public to make their contributions.

“There is nothing for Nigerians to be afraid for in the Hate Speech Bill. The bill was just read for the first time, it will go back for second reading and you and me have the opportunity to speak for or against the bill,” he stated.

The senator continued, “Why are we afraid of the bill? When a bill comes to the National Assembly, it is not every aspect that will be taken, it depends on what you and me present during the public hearing.”
