OrderPaperToday – The Spokesperson of the House of Representatives, Mr. Ben Kalu, has disclosed that the leadership of the House is using ‘back-channel diplomacy’ to ensure President Muhammadu Buhari appears before the lawmakers.
He added that the House is not summoning the President but rather inviting him as a guest, adding that no one will “harass the President.”
Explaining the nuance, Mr. Kalu said: “If it were to be a summon. The language will be, you are to appear before the House on so so date and so time. But this is back-channel diplomacy.
“We are not compelling, we are inviting. When you invite and you want your guest to appear before you, you will rub mind with your guest on his availability, and that was what the leadership did. Instead of mandating him to appear on a particular day, they rubbed mind on when it will be convenient. We have an estimate, probably next week. This is a matter of urgent public importance, time is of the essence.
“Next week, he will be able to adjust his schedule, but Tuesday will not be feasible because of the NEC meeting of our party.”
It would be recalled that the House on Tuesday resolved to ask the President to appear before the House to brief lawmakers on the security situation in the country.
On Wednesday, the Speaker of the House, Femi Gbajabiamila announced that the President agreed to the invitation of the House.
