OrderPaperToday – The youths of Africa have been called upon to participate actively in the democratic process in Nigeria.
This call was made by Mr. Raphael Igbokwe (APC, Imo), President of the Young Parliamentarians Forum (YPF) which in conjunction with Westminster Foundation for Democracy (WFD) and Youth Initiative for Advocacy Growth and Advancement (YIAGA), organized a conference and exhibition during the week in Abuja.
The Young Parliamentarians Forum is a Parliamentary Advocacy Group in Parliament charged with the responsibility of championing youth related issues and enhancing greater participation of young people in decision making and democratic process.
Declaring the two days conference open, Mr. Igbokwe enjoined young persons to get involves in the workings of the parliament and governance that it would inspire them to greater heights in their chosen areaz of endeavor.
According to him, “part of what we are propagating here is for young persons irrespective of sex or challenges should acquire the necessary skills and equality to take up those positions. However, we need a little push from the older generation and our leaders and government, if truly the the youths are leaders of tomorrow, a platform has to be created to accommodate them”.
He continued: “We must have hope believing in ourselves. The current nature of the political structure is been controlled by the older generation. So for us to have space in the political scene then we need to open up a little space for us to take over and I wish to state that we should not be seen as competitors.”
