OrderPaperToday- Smart Adeyemi of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has emerged winner of the Kogi West senatorial district rerun election which held on Saturday.
Smart defeated Dino Melaye of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who lost his bid to retain his seat at the Senate in the 9th assembly.
Announcing the result, the returning officer, Olajide Lawal said Adeyemi polled 88,373 votes while Melaye got 62,133 votes.
It would be recalled that a week ago, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared the election inconclusive and ordered a rerun.
This was because the margin between Adeyemi and Melaye was lower than the number of “registered voters in 53 polling units of the 20 registration areas in the zone where elections were cancelled.”
Adeyemi had gotten 80,118 and Melaye secured 59,548 votes with a margin of 20,570 votes which was less than the 43,127 registered voters in the 53 polling units where elections were cancelled.
It is worthy to note that Adeyemi lost his bid to return in 2015 election to Melaye.
