OrderPaperToday – The Kwara State House of Assembly has commenced debate on the general principles of the 2018 appropriation bill before it.
It would be recalled that the State Governor, Abdulfatah Ahmed, had last Thursday presented 2018 budget estimate of N181billion to the assembly for consideration and subsequent passage.
Leading the debate, the Leader of the assembly, Hassan Oyeleke, appealed for prompt passage of the budget having noted that it is built on strong fundamentals.
He added that the budget was zero based with the capital component guaranteeing completion of existing projects as well as commencement of new projects.
Oyeleke commended the state government for the improvement in the states’ Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) and therefore called on the government to write off loans to the local government council which he said would, “enhance developmental efforts at the third tier of government in the state.”
Also contributing to the debate on the budget, Mashood Bakare, emphasised the need for the assembly to intensify its oversight functions to ensure proper implementation of the 2018 budget.
He equally called for increased performance by the state government in the areas of critical infrastructure like roads, water, health, education to improve on the standard of living of the people of the state.
The Presiding officer and Deputy Speaker, Matthew Okedare applauded the lawmakers for the contributions, assuring them that all the concerns raised are duly noted.
