OrderPaperToday – If a bill before the House of Representatives scales through, Lagos, Kano and Anambra states may receive special allocation from the Federal Government.
This is part of the recommendation of a Bill for an Act to grant special economic status to certain states in Nigeria sponsored by Mr. Babajimi Benson (APC, Lagos)
The Bill primarily seeks to contribute to the fulfilment of the cardinal objective of the 8th legislative agenda of enhancing the economy through legislative initiatives to support infrastructure development.
The proposed law also called ‘Unity Bill’ also seeks to establish regional hubs of development in each of the six geo-political zones in the country.
OrderPaper.ng learnt that the Bill will make provision for the retention of 20% of the revenue the states generate for the country.
Mr. Babajimi while presenting the lead debate at plenary on Wednesday explained that “the premise of the Bill is the designation of any State within the threshold of Ten Million inhabitants as a megacity by the United Nations.
“These States like Anambra, Kano and Lagos amongst other states in this category will in turn be the catalyst for the development of other states as it is the practice in some countries like India, Malaysia, United State of America.”
The House adopted the Bill without further debate from members on the floor while Speaker Yakubu Dogara referred it to the special ad-hoc committee on the review of the 1999 constitution for further legislative input.
