‘Lagos, Rivers Assemblies declined participation in Constitution amendment’

OrderPaperToday – The President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, has revealed that Lagos and Rivers States did not participate in the Constitution amendment review.

Saraki, however, commended the other 34 states who participated in the exercise.

He made these remarks at the submission of resolutions done by the State Assemblies on the amendment process.

He said: “With this amendment, we have done things to strengthen our electoral process, we have done everything to strengthen our budgeting process, we have also more importantly strengthened our judiciary.

Let me also commend the 34 states. I had thought this exercise would have ensured that all states participated fully. The non-participation of Lagos and Rivers states is disappointing. And I hope that as we move ahead, Lagos and Rivers will take a different approach.”

The President of the red chamber also declared that a joint committee has been set up by both chambers to look into the areas of differences.

“There are other areas, of course, that we all know; devolution of powers, and others, I’m happy to let you know that as we have promised Nigerians after the first exercise, we are not going to stop, it’s a continuous process and we have not stopped. We have set up a joint committee both in the House and the Senate to look at the areas where we have differences.”
