OrderPaperToday – President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, has affirmed that he receives N750,000 monthly as salary.
He made this closure when members of the Senators Forum paid him a courtesy visit on Tuesday.
It would be recalled that Senator Shehu Sani in the 8th Senate made similar declaration, adding that they also collect N13.5 million as running cost.
Sani’s revelation resulted into negative outburst from the public which questioned the lawmakers’ humongous earnings.
Lawan on the other hand did not reveal the amount pegged on running cost.
According to him, he does not believe in the word “jumbo pay” while stressing that his office “needs proper funding” to conduct his oversight.
He said: “The 9th National Assembly is going to be open so Nigerians will know what we are doing. I never believe there is anything called jumbo pay to the National Assembly. The National Assembly members receive what is their salary. I receive N750,000 as my salary.
“My office needs to be properly funded and therefore I cannot conduct my oversight without some backing. Nigerians need to understand this. We need to continue relating with Nigerians because they deserve to be explained to.”
The President of the red chamber further canvassed more funding for federal legislature because it “is so critical in any national development.”
