NEWBIES: Orji Kalu, EFCC ‘customer’ and former Abia Gov now a senator

OrderPaperToday – Two-time former governor of Abia State, Orji Uzo Kalu, just joined the team of newbies of the 9th Senate.

He defeated the incumbent, Senator Mao Ohuabunwa in the battle for Abia north senatorial seat.

The senator-elect was a candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and according to the returning officer for the senatorial election Dr. Charles Anumodu, he polled 31,203 votes to defeat Ohuabunwa of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) who secured 20,801 votes.

Orji Kalu was born in April 21, 1960 to Eunice Uzor Kalu. His mother was quite rich and influential and held sway her son’s governorship as ‘mother excellency.’ Orji attended Christ the King School Aba and Government College Umuahia. After studying at Barewa College, Zaria, he enrolled in the University of Maiduguri where he studied political science. He also has a degree from Abia State University, a Certificate in Business Administration from Harvard University and honorary doctorates from the universities of Maiduguri and Abia State.

He served as the governor of Abia State from May 29, 1999, to May 29, 2007. He has been investigated and currently being prosecuted for alleged money laundering by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission(EFCC) since his exit from office.

Kalu was a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and founded the Progressive Peoples Alliance (PPA) afterwards. He was the party’s presidential candidate in the April 2007 general election. He is currently a member of the ruling party after he officially announced his resignation from PPA.

He is the chairman of SLOK Holding and the Daily Sun and New Telegraph newspapers.
