NEWBIES: Umanah, ex Akwa Ibom commissioner lands in Reps

OrderPaperToday – As we approach the 9th assembly, we have familiar lawmakers, some who already attained senior class (more than 2 terms) and we have those who are starting their journey in the National Assembly for the first time. On the list of the House of Representative first timer is Mr. Aniekan Umanah.

In no doubt, the just concluded National Assembly election has given Mr. Aniekan a sweet moment of victory as he just earned a seat in the Green Chamber to represent Abak / Etim Ekpo / Ika Federal Constituency, Akwa Ibom.

The Re-elect who contested under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) defeated his opponent, Ekon Emmanuel of the All Progressive Congress (APC).

Umanah was born in Abak Town, Abak Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State. He got enrolled for his Primary Education at the Bishop Clark’s Primary School, Abak, where he obtained his First School Leaving Certificate in 1979. He proceeded to Holy Family College, Abak for his Secondary Education and completed his post-primary education at Lutheran High School, Obot Idim Ibesikpo in 1984. He then gained admission into the then University of Cross River Stateor his tertiary education. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History B.A (Hons) History in 1989 and is an alumnus of Cambridge Business School.

He later enrolled at the Nigerian Institute of Journalism, Lagos, where he bagged a Post Graduate Diploma in Media and Public Relations in 1994. In 1997, Aniekan Umanah’s desire for professional excellence saw him at Advertising Practitioners Council of Nigeria (APCON) where he obtained a Diploma in Advertising.

In 1992, he was employed in Newswatch Communications Ltd., Lagos as a correspondent. Within his period of practice at Newswatch, he worked in several editorial and later advertising capacities and rose to the managerial position of Controller, Special Projects and Advertorial Business Development (1992 – 2004).

During the governorship tenure of Godswill Obot Akpabio, Mr. Aniekan was appointed as the Commissioner for Information and Social Re-Orientation on the 8th of July 2008. He is a Fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Management. A devout Christian, Mr. Umanah is happily married to Maureen and the union is blessed with children.
