OrderPaperToday – President of ECOWAS Female Parliament (ECOFEPA), Senator Stella Oduah, has stated that the body advocates for the participation of women in politics.
Oduah made this remark on March 8, also known as International Women’s Day.
She said: “The President of the Senate has made that promise and all Senators are in agreement, they have concurred to that. It is the right thing to do, and it is way overdue.
“Everybody should press for women to emerge, not just politically but in every way. Therefore all activities that have to do with women, we must make sure that we bring it to the front burner. That should be everybody’s campaign.
“Already, [the] ECOWAS Female Parliamentarians Association (ECOFEPA), is advocating for women, not just for equality but full participation in both elective and selective offices.
“As President of ECOFEPA, I can assure you that we are taking that advocacy globally.”
She disclosed that 70% women in West Africa are disenfranchised which “is a loss to us.
“So we must correct those wrongs, we must encourage women, we must prioritise their activities, we must make sure that progress and activities of community development are anchored on women and women have proven to be very steadfast when it comes to management of resources.
“My message to Nigerian women today is that they should keep hope alive, they must participate fully and should not allow themselves to be discouraged by anybody. Gender should not be and obstacle, it has not been and it must not be an obstacle.”
