OrderPaperToday – A Member of the House of Representatives from Ogun State, Mr. Kolawole Lawal, of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has decamped to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila on Tuesday read the letter of Lawal’s defection on the floor of the House during plenary session.
Lawal stated in the letter that the reason for his defection is based on the division and irreconcilable differences within his political party back in his state.
Deputy minority leader, Mr. Toby Okechukwu (PDP, Enugu), moved against the development and raised a point of order to counter Lawal’s claim that there was no division in the PDP in Ogun State.
He called for the seat of the defector to be declared vacant and was greeted with a stiff opposition by the presiding officer, Mr. Gbajabiamila.
The speaker took Mr. Okechukwu down memory lane by recalling past defections in the green chamber.
He asked: ‘Do you remember when 48 members of our party the APC including a serving speaker decamped to your party so did you raise any point of objection? ”
Consequently, the point of order did not fly as the Speaker ruled the lawmaker out of order and asked Lawal to step forward to be welcomed to the fold of the APC amidst cheers from members of the ruling party.
