The anti-climax of the 2019 Nigeria’s general election was witnessed at the wee hours of Saturday, February 16, 2019 when the electoral umpire, INEC callously postponed the election citing various reasons ranging from security to logistics amongst others.

With the election now rescheduled to hold on Saturday, 23 February 2019, we hereby offer an analysis of the likely shape/configuration of the ninth senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. This analysis is based on several factors, which are characteristic of the Nigerian political environment; ethnicity, religion, zoning, incumbency, godfatherism and of course, MONEY.

While the 2019 election in Nigeria has positively witnessed dynamism in the opening up of political spaces with electorates now more enlightened than before coupled with the social media usage explosion, the core voters are still sadly swayed by money in a country where poverty is at an all-time high.

In most states of the federation including the FCT, the two major political parties; the All Progressives Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party, will dominate the ninth senate although there might still be some surprises from other parties but their chances are quite remote.

Abia North
With 16 candidates vying for the Senate seat here, the contest should be a two-horse race between the incumbent; Senator Mao Ohuabunwa of the PDP and a former governor, H.E Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu of the APC.
Verdict: Senator Mao Arukwe Ohuabunwa (PDP)

Abia Central
This is the district in Abia State that could witness the real battle. As is characteristic of most governors after their two terms of eight years, they always retire to the Senate. However, most former governors come to the Nigerian Senate with no clear-cut legislative agenda and often times end up with below average performances. They are majorly benchwarmers in the Senate. Such is the scenario with the former governor of the State, H.E Senator Theodore Ahamefule Orji.
With lack-lustre performance, the former governor will face a stiff challenge from the Senator who represented this district in the seventh senate, Senator Nkechi Nwaogu of the APC.
Verdict: H.E Senator Theodore Orji (PDP)
