OrderPaperToday – The Supreme Court on Friday sacked all candidates elected under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Zamfara State in the 2019 general elections for failing to meet up with the stipulated deadline for the conduct of its primaries as stipulated in the electoral law.
Outgoing governor, Abdul-azeez Yari who was returned as elected into the senate is one of the biggest casualties of the ruling which also affected other APC candidates across the state.
In a ruling given by Justice Paul Adamu Galinji, the court said the APC had no candidates prior to the general elections and therefore did not participate in the contest.
The five-member panel of justices, in a unanimous judgment, held that the party in the state failed to conduct primaries in accordance with the rules and therefore described votes cast for the APC as “wasted votes.”
It accordingly declared the political party with the second highest votes in the polls is duly elected to the different offices affected.
Going by the above ruling, it is expected that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) would withdraw all certificates of return given to the APC governor-elect, all state and federal lawmakers and issue same to the People Democratic Party (PDP).
