OrderPaperToday – Douye Diri beat bookmakers to their predictions when he emerged as winner of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship primary held on Tuesday. He thrashed heavyweights in the race, including Mr. Timi Alaibe, serial contestant for the office of governor of Bayelsa State.
Douye. 60, was born Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.
He currently represents Bayelsa central senatorial district in the 9th assembly after winning in the February general elections.
Diri is a political scientist who served as the first National Organizing Secretary of the Ijaw National Congress (INC), the foremost organization of the Ijaw nation.
Between 2000 to 2002, he was appointed Executive Secretary, Centre for Youth Development in Bayelsa State and made Commissioner for Youth and Sports in 2005.
In 2012, he became the Chairman of the PDP Disciplinary Council in Bayelsa state before he was appointed as Deputy Chief of Staff to the Government.
He contested to represent Kolokuma, Opokuma, and Yenagoa Federal Constituency in 2015 and won.
While in the House of Representatives, he sponsored bills including that which sought to establish Nigerian Sports Anti-Doping Agency and Civil Society Commission of Nigeria.
Most of his motions led the green chamber to conduct several investigations into issues of national interest.
His motion led the House of Representatives to probe the termination of contract between Nigerian Ports Authority and INTELS Nigeria Limited.
More motions from Diri resulted into investigations into allegations and counter allegations of corruption between the former Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun and suspended Director General (DG) of the Security and Exchange Commission (SEC) Munir Gwarzo over Oando’s forensic audits.
The House committee on National Security and Intelligence was mandated to investigate a $44million scandal at the Nigerian Intelligence Agency (NIA) and the controversy surrounding the appointment of a new Director General for the agency, Rufai Abubakar, following a motion moved by Diri.
More legislative contributions by the Bayelsa Senator in the green chamber led it to investigate the process and financial proceeds of licensing for Nigerian oil fields that have remain undeveloped despite being issued out to marginal field operators.
The cycle of crisis over the suspension of the Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), Prof. Usman Yusuf was probed after Douye’s motion.
For his constituents, he raised a motion over the severe pollution of the Niger Delta environment due to alarmingly high incidences of preventable oil spills from operations of oil multi-national companies.
A related motion urged the federal government to declare Bayelsa state, a state of natural disaster due to incessant floods.
Sen. Diri will be representing the PDP in the November 2019 governorship polls and will battle the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, David Lyon.
While Diri enjoys the backing of incumbent Governor, Seriake Dickson, Lyon has support from the Minister of State for Petroleum, Timipre Sylva.
Although, both are from the Central senatorial district in the state, one favourable chance that can spur Diri to victory is the reign of PDP in Bayelsa since 1999.
16th of November remains the day for an epic battle between the duo and to test the political might of PDP in retaining Bayelsa state, the Glory of all Lands.
