Protest as Senate approves nominees for federal service commission

OrderPaperToday – The Senate on Wednesday confirmed the nomination of Bello Tukur from Katsina State as Chairman of the Federal Civil Service Commission (FCSC) while 9 others were approved as new commissioners.

In addition, three Commissioners had their terms renewed for five years, bringing the total number of confirmed Commissioners to twelve.

The newly appointed Commissioners are: Moses Ngbale (Adamawa), Waziri Ngurno (Borno), Bello Babura (Jigawa), Ahmed Sarna (Kebbi), Iyabode Odulate-Yusuf (Ogun), Shehu Danyaya (Niger), Fatai Adebayo (Oyo), Ejoh Chukwuemeka (Anambra), Joe Poroma (Rivers).

Those who had their appointments renewed as Commissioners are: Ibrahim Mohammed (Kaduna), Aminu Sheidu (Kogi) and Simon Etim (Akwa-Ibom).

The appointment of Chukwuemeka from Anambra and the renewal of the appointment of Etim from Akwa-Ibom drew protests from Senator Sam Egwu (PDP, Ebonyi) and Senator Rose Oko (PDP, Cross-River).

The duo argued that Chukwuemeka (Anambra) and Etim (Akwa-Ibom) be replaced with candidates from Ebonyi and Cross-river respectively in the spirit of an establish system of rotation.

“The whole of Cross River State is agitated because the norm was broken and the incumbent has been suggested again for another five years.

“We are aware that in the Act itself, there is a provision for renewal of appointment but in the past, it has always been rotated. We ask that his confirmation be stepped down and reconsidered,” Senator Oko pleaded.

Senator Nelson Effiong (APC, Akwa-Ibom) and Senator Philip Aduda (PDP, FCT) urged the people of Cross-River to exercise patience and wait for their turn to enjoy double terms since there is a provision for renewal of appointment in the FCSC Act.
