OrderPaperToday – Mr. Raymond Dokpesi, Chairman Emeritus of DAAR Communications Plc on Thursday led hundreds of protesters in defiance of a heavy downpour to storm the National Assembly in protest over illegal clampdown on the media by the federal government.
Dokpesi, who alongside other protesters wore T-Shirts with the inscription ‘Gag the Media….. Kill Democracy,” condemned the undue interference of government agencies in the running of the media despite the freedom of Speech provision in the Nigerian Constitution.
He specifically condemned a broadcast license suspension order by the National Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) which effectively shuts down the operations of Africa Independent Television (AIT) and the Raypower FM networks.
The protesters demanded for the immediate intervention of the National Assembly in the matter in the interest of the nation’s democracy while also calling for the removal of the Director General of the NBC, Kawu Modibo over alleged unprofessional running of the Commission.
