FACT CHECK: Did APC lawmakers meet in Sheraton to impeach Saraki?

OrderPaperToday- In the heat of the siege on the National Assembly by operatives of the Department of Security Services (DSS) earlier today, media aides of the President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, released information that senators of the All Progressives Congress (APC) were meeting in the Abuja Sheraton Hotel, with the aim of impeaching him.

The statement went viral as members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in both the Senate and House of Representatives, sustained pressures on the security barricade until they were allowed into the premises, albeit the chambers remained inaccessible.

However, to fact check the claim by Saraki’s aides, OrderPaperNG made strenuous efforts to track the senators said to be holed up in the hotel. This included surreptitious and overt visits to the Sheraton hotel severally today. There was no trace of the said meeting.

A member of the House of Representatives, Mr. Raji Wale (APC, Lagos) who was contacted to react to the story denied the news.

Speaking to OrderPaper Nigeria during a telephone interview, the lawmaker asserted: “It is not true that APC is holding a meeting in Sheraton because, as I speak with you, I’m in Lagos and I’m not aware of any meeting going on.

“And, if the PDP lawmakers are saying we want to impeach Saraki, so why is it that it’s only PDP lawmakers that are in NASS and no APC lawmaker. They are just trying to play a prank on Nigerians and except they are the ones that want to initiate the impeachment process but again there has to be two third majority to impeach a Senate President or a speaker.”

Concerning the absurd amount of security personnel stationed at the gates of the National Assembly complex, the Lagos state lawmaker added: “As for the security operatives they are only there to maintain peace and order.”

As at the time of filing this report, no lawmakers have been sighted at the Sheraton Hotel,  Abuja, where Mr. Saraki’s office alerted that APC lawmakers will convened to begin an ‘illegal’ impeachment process against the President of the Senate.

Recall that the New Media aide to the President of the Senate, Olu Onemola, alerted the public to an impeachment exercise against his principal scheduled to take place at Sheraton Hotel, Abuja, earlier today.
