OrderPaperToday- A lawmaker from Osun state, Mr. Mojeed Alabi (APC) has called for the immediate release of Shiite leader Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky who has been in detention since 2015 on the orders of the Buhari led government.
Professor Alabi was reacting to a press statement recently issued by the Shiites religious group accusing security officials of attacking their members leading to several loss of lives including women and children.
The movement also insisted there’s no going back on their protest until their leader Shiekh El- Zakzaky is released as ordered by the judiciary.
According to Mr. Abdulahi Zango who is the chairman of the Shiites Academic Forum, “this press conference is to update the public on grave atrocities and crimes committed by the Military and Nigerian Police and urge the public to dismiss the lies and blackmail being fabricated by the Buhari-led government, the Military and the Police”.
Responding to the issues raised by the group, the lawmaker said “it is undemocratic for any citizen or group of persons to be denied the right to protest. Therefore, Shiites movement has the right to insist on the release of their leader as long as the protest doesn’t in any way breach the security of the people. Also it beholds on government to ensure they do not infringe on the rights of the protesters”
Speaking in respect of the killings, Mr. Alabi noted that, ” it is wrong for the security to direct their arms on innocent souls who are exercising their fundamental human right to protest if indeed any one of them is found carrying arms against the law of the land, the law is there to take care of it but where they are not carrying arms then the security has no right at all to direct arms at them and any attempt to do so amount to unlawful usage of state apparatus against citizens.”
According to him, ” if the court has indeed granted bail to him then the federal government has to obey the order because they have no right under obligation to keep their leader.”
