OrderPaperToday – The Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Climate Change, Sam Onuigbo (PDP, Abia) has accused President Buhari’s aides of frustrating the President’s efforts on climate change.
He made this comment at a press conference on the passage of the climate change bill, held in Abuja on Saturday.
Onuigbo noted that the President’s commitment to climate change remains undoubted. However, he decried the attitude of the people charged with the responsibility of implementing the President’s agenda on Climate change.
He said: “It is not in doubt that the president has been passionate, right from his inaugural address. In speeches either in Beijing or New York, you will always find climate change. However, the other side that bothers me as the Chairman of the Committee, some of the aides in these MDAs find it convenient to join the president on trips but, what shocks us is when you invite them to talks on implementation, we are not seeing reciprocal action on their side.”
Onuigbo urged the President to sign the Climate Change Bill, which has the potential to ensure the coordination of all efforts on climate change. He added that the devastating effect of climate change on the Lake Chad region is partly responsible for the herdsmen crisis and food insecurity in the North East.
The lawmaker also lamented the poor allocation to the fight against climate change, revealing that funds for this cause have reduced drastically, from N8.1B in 2017 to N1.9B in the 2018 budget. He noted that the government must “accept that challenging times need urgent and practical solutions.”
While commending the Leadership of both Chambers, Onuigbo reiterated the commitment of his committee to the climate change cause.
