OrderPaperToday – The House of Representatives during the week considered nine (9) bills seeking to establish new federal universities in each of the six geopolitical zones of Nigeria.
It equally endorsed the planned establishment of some new federal polytechnics in Shendam, Abriba and Dukku in Plateau, Abia and Gombe States respectively.
The House of Representatives committee on Tertiary Education Services in conjunction with key stakeholders in the education sector parleyed at a public hearing on the bills and resolved that these new institutions will boost development and economic growth since education is the bed rock of every nation.
According to the traditional ruler of Dukku local government in Gombe State, Mr. Abubakar Abdulkadir, “education is the backbone of every nation’s development so we need federal polytechnic in Gombe State which is long over due and having one now would befit everybody not just people in that locality.”
The traditional ruler also thanked Mrs. Aishatu Dukku (APC, Gombe) for affording them good representation and for sponsoring the bill to provide for the establishment of the federal polytechnic.
Similarly, the lawmakers also approved the amendment of the Acts establishing the federal universities at Nsukka, Maiduguri, Sokoto, Bauchi, Ile-Ife among others so that persons who chair their governing councils would have the requisite qualifications and ensure adherence to the laid down rules of these schools.
