OrderPaperToday – A member of the House of Representatives from Tankar federal constituency, Jigawa, Mr. Sani Zorro on Tuesday called on the Federal and State Government to intervene on a case of alleged land grab by Messrs Lee group, a Chinese company.
Raising a motion under matters of urgent public importance, Zorro said his people have been displaced by foreign companies under the pretext of investing in the country, saying “the company’s ploy to forcefully acquire over 15,000 hectares of farmland thereby dispossessing more than 10,000 peasant farmers in over 35 farming communities in Gagarawa local government of my constituency, ostensibly to grow sugar cane, against the will of majority of the people who own farmlands.
“There is tension and threats of breakdown of law and order in the area, consequent upon the company’s audacity to proceed with an illegal compensation exercise since Tuesday, November 10, 2016, despite a law suit and stiff resistance by owners of the farmlands. We cannot build our nation if we continue to elevate the citizens of other nations above our own citizens.”
Zorro who said public office holders have a duty to protect lives and property of the country’s citizens, prayed the authorities to resist the move by the Chinese.
But some members like Mr. Ossai Nicholas argued that the Land Use Act does not give room for the Federal government to intervene in such matter.
Mr. Oghene Egoh also opposed the motion stating that the Chinese firm has done nothing wrong as the purchase of the land will help boost Agricultural practice and will assist in empowering those in the community.
Speaker Yakubu Dogara, while ruling on the motion, referred it to the committee on judiciary to advice the House on the next step.
