OrderPaperToday – The House of Representatives on Wednesday resolved to urge the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA) to as a matter of urgency, commence the immediate rehabilitation of Ahmadu Bello Way in Otukpo/Ohimim’ federal constituency of Benue State.
The call is based on the need to ease transportation of commuters and avoid total breakdown of law and order.
This was after the House observed a minute silence in honour of those that loss their lives as a result of the bad state of the road.
The motion, which was moved by Mrs. Blessing Onuh (APGA, Benue), noted that road was an an important infrastructure in Nigeria which enables smooth movement of goods, persons and equally enhances the economic potential of a country and its citizens.
Onuh said “the poor state of the rail system in the country and the absence of developed inland water ways, road transportation remains the only alternative.
The road in question passes through the heart of the commercial city of Otukpo, Otukpo/Ohimini federal constituency of Benue State.”
He stressed that the road has remained the major artery linking Otukpo/Enugu, Otukpo/Alaide/Makurdi and has been the major road linking the northern and eastern regions of the country.
She also informed that despite payment made to the contractor handling the road project, about 6km of the road in the heart of Otukpo town was abandoned, making the road inaccessible and causing high traffic that has led to avoidable fatal accidents and loss of lives and properties.
Onuh further lamented the absence of alternative route has affected the economic activities in Otukpo town and its environs.
The motion was adopted through a voice vote when Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila put the question and referred to the committee on Works for further legislative inputs.
