Reps to get committee on spate of insecurity

OrderPaperToday – The House of Representatives has resolved to set up an adhoc committee to determine the rising phenomena of insecurity in the country occasioned by killings and kidnapping and proffer solutions.
The green chamber also wants the  constitution amendment revisited with regards to credible options for effective policing of communities.
These resolutions emanated from a motion entitled “Urgent national security attention on the killing of seven police men and others by unknown gunmen in Galadimawa, Abuja amongst other killings in the country” sponsored by Mr. Chris Azubogu (PDP, Anambra) during plenary on Tuesday.
Mr. Azubogu while leading the debate expressed worries that the attack on the policemen is coming too close after the Plateau killings and others in the country.
According to him, these killings now call to question the internal security management by government as provided in the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
“There is need to reinvigorate the security apparatus of the country to better secure the lives and property of the people”, Mr. Azubogu said.
Contributors to the debate while calling for the restructuring of the country’s security apparatus noted that no report has since been heard of the seized weapon from Turkey.
“The civilians are no longer safe. If Abuja cannot be safe at this level, how will other States be?”, Mr. Odebunmi Olusegun (APC, Oyo) questioned.
The lawmaker expressed worries on the neglect of Close Circuit Television Cameras (CCTV) in parts of Abuja.
A unanimous adoption of the motion was therefore made by the House that the adhoc committee be constituted and its report be submitted within six weeks for further legislative action.
Recall that on July the 2nd, 2018, seven police men attached to the Federal Capital Territory Police Command on duty at Galadimawa area of Abuja were killed at their duty post while many passerbys were wounded in an attack by unknown gun men numbering over a dozen on six motorbikes.
