OrderPaperToday – The House of Representatives has resolved to investigate the abandonment of work on the Lokoja/Okene/Auchi express way.
The House committee on Works has been mandated to interface with Ministry of Works and Housing to understand why contractors abandoned the road and to review the existing contracts.
The resolution was sequel to a motion moved by Yusuf Tijani (APC, Kogi) during plenary on Wednesday.
Moving the motion, Tijani highlighted the importance of the road which he said linked 7 states together, including being of arterial utility to the Ajaokuta Steel mill.
He added that the road has already been consumed by gully erosion which he puts at 70%, adding that “the road has suffered the worst form of neglect in the history of road maintenance and rehabilitation in Nigeria despite having featured in successive budget for over a decade among capital projects to be undertaken.”
The lawmaker lamented that the current state of the road is a “sad commentary on the state of highways in Nigeria, thus painting an unsavory picture of the country’s deteriorating culture of road use.”
