OrderPaperToday – The House of Representatives on Wednesday adopted a motion urging the Ministry of Petroleum Resources, Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) and the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB) to ensure remittance of two percent of annual budgetary provision for the Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun in the 2018 appropriations estimates.
The House also resolved to mandate the committees on Petroleum Resources (Upstream), Tertiary Education and Services, Finance and Local Content to ensure strict compliance of the resolution.
This followed a motion sponsored by Mr. Reyenieju Daniel (PDP, Delta) which noted that the Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurum, Delta State enabling Act was passed in 2017.
He also noted that the Federal University of Petroleum Resources ranks amongst the first best in Africa and the seventh in the world which core mandate was to produce skilled personnel with the capacity to understand, use and adapt existing technology, improve and develop new ones.
He further explained that the specialized university has the capacity and strength in science and technology with special focus on petroleum resources and other allied sector.
According to Mr Reyenieju, “section 9 (2), (3) and (4) of the act that established the Federal University of Petroleum Resources provides for the Ministry of Petroleum Resources, Petroleum Technology Development Fund and the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board shall provide two percent of their annual budget for research programmes in petroleum technology and facilities, and the gross revenue shall carter for academic and infrastructural development of the University”.
He expressed concern that paucity of funds would hinder the capacity of the University to conduct researches that would impact positively on the oil and gas sector.
The motion was passed when Speaker Yakubu Dogara put the question.
