OrderPaperToday – The Senate has once again adjourned plenary till the 9th of April for budget defence by Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) of government.
The chamber had previously suspended its proceedings on the 20th of March for similar exercise but an update from the Vice Chairman Senate committee on Appropriations, Senator Sonny Ogbuoji (APC, Ebonyi) indicated that less than 10 committees were yet to submit their reports.
Oguboji while giving his submission on Tuesday, requested that the chamber extends the time frame for submission by a week in order for the remaining committees to submit on Friday.
He also asked that the committee of appropriation be empowered to go ahead with the submissions from the executive in the event committees fail to meet up with the new time frame.
The Senate President, Bukola Saraki approved his requests and urged his colleagues to hasten their work with the MDAs.
Saraki stated that he wants the budget passed by 16th of April before the Easter break.
He said: “Let us agree that they submit by Friday, then we suspend plenary for a week till 9th of April and during that week, latest that week by Thursday we should be able to lay the report and pass this budget by 16th of April because we have the Easter break coming as well. We don’t have that luxury of time.”
Meanwhile in its usual tradition, the chamber adjourned plenary over the death of Mohammed Dantani, member representing Yauri/Shanga/Ngaski federal constituency of Kebbi state who died in March after a brief illness.
