Senate summons DSS, Military, Police over Kaduna killings

OrderPaperToday – The Senate has summoned the State Security Service, the Military and the Police to address the incessant killings in Kaduna State.

They are billed to appear next week.

This follows a motion moved by Senator Shehu Sani (APC, Kaduna) on Wednesday, who lamented on the continued killings in the Birnin-Gwari LGA, despite the presence of security agencies in the area.

He announced that two days ago, about 87 people were kidnapped along the Birnin-Gwari/Kaduna road.

Also, several people were murdered in Gwaska village within the same local government a week before this week’s attacks.

“Before then, we have had a series of attacks and invasion of villages and towns in the same local government. Months ago, about 11 soldiers were killed by bandits and criminal gangs in Birnin-Gwari.

“Birnin-Gwari, parts of Zamfara and Niger State are becoming the Sambisa of the north-west. People are killed everyday. People are kidnapped everyday. Villages have been raided and razed by bandits. Farmers have chosen to abandon their farms and move to cities.”

While he thanked the United Nations for their help in bringing the crisis to the global spotlight, he stressed that there is a need for the federal government to take Birnin-Gwari as seriously as other parts of Nigeria.

Giving his remarks, Bukola Saraki (the President of the Senate) described the killings “as a very serious matter,” while suggesting that the officials and security agencies be summoned.

The motion was approved.
